Steve & his son
If you're in Whetstone, chances are you're either in one of the older homes near Cross Country Way or one of the newer estates that have gone up over the past few years as the village has grown. Either way, The Plumb Doctor covers boiler and plumbing work here regularly, and the two types of property tend to throw up different problems. Older houses often have ageing pipework or boilers that are on their last legs, while new-build homes surprisingly bring their own headaches, snagging issues, combi boilers fitted in tight cupboards with poor access, or systems that were rushed through by the developer's contractor and never quite set up right. Steve and his son know both sides of it. Whetstone's handy for the A426 and not far from the Grand Union Canal, so getting out to you isn't a problem, whether it's a boiler breakdown on a cold morning or a blocked drain that needs sorting before it gets worse. We're Gas Safe registered, rated 10/10 on Checkatrade from 131 reviews, and a family firm that turns up when we say we will.
Whetstone homes and common issues
Whetstone's a mix of older 1930s semis around the village centre near the church, and then the bigger estates that went up from the 60s through to the 90s as it got swallowed into south Leicester. There are a fair few bungalows dotted about too, popular with folks who've downsized but stayed local. Most of the older semis still have their original cast iron radiators and back boilers if they haven't been touched, while the newer estate housing tends to run combi boilers tucked in a kitchen cupboard or an upstairs airing cupboard. Loft conversions are common on the bigger family homes, which usually means extra pipework and radiators bolted onto a system that wasn't designed for the extra load.
- Back boilers and old gravity fed systems in the older 1930s semis, often overdue an upgrade to a modern combi or system boiler
- Airing cupboard cylinders that have never been descaled, common round here given how hard the water is
- Radiators in loft conversions running cold or taking ages to heat up because the system's been extended without rebalancing it
- Outside taps and exposed pipework freezing up in the bungalows and older builds where pipe insulation was never brought up to scratch

Whetstone - frequently asked questions
- Do you cover Whetstone for boiler breakdowns?
- Yes, Whetstone is one of the areas we get out to regularly. If your boiler's packed in, give us a call and we'll do our best to get to you the same day, especially if you've got no heating or hot water.
- We're in a new-build in Whetstone, can you still help if something's wrong with the boiler?
- Absolutely. New-build boilers still go wrong, sometimes because they were fitted in a rush or in an awkward spot with poor ventilation. We work on all major boiler brands, so whatever's tucked in your airing cupboard, we can service or repair it.
- I've got a blocked drain outside my house in Whetstone, can you sort that?
- Yes, blocked drains and pipes are one of the jobs we do most often. We'll come out, find out what's causing it, and clear it properly rather than just pushing the problem further down the line.
- Do you do boiler servicing for older properties near Cross Country Way?
- Yes, plenty of the homes in that part of Whetstone have older boilers and pipework that need a bit more care. We service all makes and models and we're happy to flag up anything that's worth keeping an eye on for the future.
- How quickly can you get to Whetstone for an emergency?
- We aim to get to you as fast as we can, usually the same day for genuine emergencies like burst pipes or a boiler that's completely died. Give us a ring and we'll tell you straight how soon we can be there.
- Can you fit a new boiler in a Whetstone property?
- Yes, boiler installations and upgrades are a big part of what we do. Whether you're replacing an old boiler or upgrading to something more efficient, we'll talk you through the options honestly, no pushing you towards a particular brand.
- I've got low water pressure in my house, is that something you can look at?
- Yes, low pressure can be down to a few different things, from the boiler itself to an issue somewhere in the pipework. We'll come and have a proper look and explain what's going on before we do any work.
- Do you do general plumbing jobs like leaking taps and pipes, not just boilers?
- Yes, general plumbing is a big part of the job alongside boiler work. Leaking taps, dripping pipes, running toilets, whatever it is, we're happy to sort it, no job too small.
- Are you Gas Safe registered for work in Whetstone?
- Yes, we're fully Gas Safe registered, which you can check on our profile. That covers all our boiler and gas work across Whetstone and the wider Leicester area.
- What if my boiler keeps losing pressure, can you find out why?
- Yes, a boiler that keeps losing pressure usually means there's a leak somewhere in the system, even a small one. We'll track down where it's coming from and get it fixed properly rather than just topping it back up each time.
